I want to record from my viola in a budget range of 100 USD and I want to choose a good mic and after long search I found
MXL 990
Behringer C-1
Samson C01
Do you have any idea about the best one
thank you
I will use MXL usb/XLR mate which provides also phantom power supply
I also found MXL770 mic and I think it is better for the viola because the manufacturer states that it is suitable for strings
I would definitely check out these cascade microphones, too. They are incredibly inexpensive, and ribbon mics generally compliment string instruments.

If you have a more serious budget, or are looking for some of the best, check out the Tripp and Crowley ribbon mics as well.
I'd second the mention of smaller-diaphragm condensers. I've gotten good results, on violin, with the AT2021. I got it as part of the AT 2020 and 2021 studio pack.

July 17, 2008 at 05:54 PM · For recording violins, you're better off with a smaller diaphram mic rather than the mid-large ones you've named. Two of the mics you've named also will need a preamp, which is going to double your cost, and one only plugs into a computer, so the next question is what do you intend to plug the mic into?
I think your question is more complex than you thought!
