Karl Knilling Violins

February 4, 2008 at 06:44 AM · i have had a Karl Knilling model 8kf vioin for 11 years. i would like to know more about Karl Knilling and Knilling violins. can anyone help me?

February 4, 2008 at 02:55 PM · My sense of Knilling's is they were the last of German factory vlns. imported in the 1980's and early 90's before the German labor contracts pushed German student violins out of the general US market. Briefly, student vlns then came from Eastern Europe, but were eclipsed by China. There were Japanese & Korean vlns the same time frame as Knilling's to my recall. I had a few students buy Knilling's. The ones I heard tending to be light and treble-y. Pleasant but lacking a certain depth of tone. Sue
