Alan Bodman

Alan Bodman began violin study at age four with his father, Lyman Bodman, Professor Emeritus of Violin and Viola at Michigan State University. He received his B.M., magna cum laude from Michigan State University and his M.M. from the University of Michigan. His major violin studies include work with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy Delay, Paul Makanowitzky and Walter Verdehr. After 13 years on the faculty of Washington State University, he returned east to join the faculties of The University of Akron and the Meadowmount School of Music in New York where he has taught for the past 26 years. Many of his former students now hold positions at universities across the country and pursue active careers as performers and orchestral musicians. Mr. Bodman has performed extensively in solo recitals in collaboration with such renowned pianists as Anne Epperson and Ralph Votapek, as well as in solo and chamber music performances with illustrious artists such as Joshua Bell, Donald Weilerstein, Joseph Silverstein, James Buswell and Gerardo Ribeiro. As a member of the Kimbrough Trio and the WSU Chamber Players Mr. Bodman toured throughout the Northwest. He has been featured as soloist in several recordings for National Public Television, and was a frequent guest with the Gabrielli Trio of the University of Akron. Formerly Principal Violist of the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Bodman now has performed as Concertmaster for the past 18 years. He also is concertmaster and frequent soloist with the recently formed chamber orchestra, Akron Baroque. In 1988 he and his wife, Juilliard trained violinist Amy Barlowe, formed the duo [AB]² (AB-squared) and subsequently released a world premiere CD on the Azica record label. Reviews in the American Record Guide stated, “Their tonal production is flawless, and musically they meet the highest standards.” The Strad magazine attributes Mr. Bodman's playing with the comments "...delectable sound ...silken-toned ...musically introspective."
