Biber Rosary Sonatas (Rosenkranzonaten)
Leila Schayegh, violin
La Centifolia

Before the Bach Sonatas and Partitas, there were Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's "Rosary Sonatas." In this cycle of 16 sonatas, Biber sets to music the mysteries of the various Rosary prayers that trace the life of Jesus. Biber made extensive use of "scordatura," requiring a new tuning for each sonata, and these sonatas are some of the most technically challenging of the Baroque era. Swiss violinist Leila Schayegh, who specializes in Baroque and period performance, performs with her ensemble La Centifolia. BELOW: Leila Schayegh performs Biber's Rosary Sonata No. 9.

Love Symposium
Esther Yoo, violin
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Long Yu conducting

Esther Yoo’s new recording explores musical thoughts on the theme of "love," together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Long Yu. Read our interview with Esther Yoo here. The album includes Leonard Bernstein’s "Serenade After Plato’s Symposium," a new arrangement of the Adagietto from Mahler's Symphony No. 5, and Vaughan Williams’ "The Lark Ascending." My London
Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin

Star-violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter releases "My London," a personally curated album of past performances related to that city. The release marks the beginning of a seven-part album series through 2026 and 2027 inspired by different cities with which Anne-Sophie Mutter has had outstanding musical encounters, concerts, and recordings. They will follow the artist "around the globe," via Berlin, Lucerne, Salzburg and Vienna to Tokyo and New York. BELOW: Anne Sophie-Mutter talks about her album "My London."

Brouhaha: Shaped by Fire
Maiani da Silva, violin

This album includes world premiere recordings of six new works for solo violin, voice, and electronic sounds commissioned and performed by violinist Maiani da Silva, a member of the four-time Grammy®-winning sextet Eighth Blackbird and lecturer on contemporary performance practice in Yale’s Department of Music. The recording and performance project documented by the album combines music with anthropology: da Silva commissioned six stylistically eclectic composers – Ian Gottlieb, Zachary Good, Fjóla Evans, Viet Cuong, Jascha Narveson, and Kelley Polar – to write works for solo violin based on what intrigues them about human nature.

If you have a new recording you would like us to consider for inclusion in our "For the Record" feature, please e-mail Editor Laurie Niles. Be sure to include the name of your album, a link to it and a short description of what it includes.
