Bach Sonatas & Partitas
Renaud Capucon, violin
"Bach’s music has always calmed and comforted me, while at the same time filling me with feelings of energy and joy." French violinist Renaud Capuçon first became aware of J.S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas via an LP owned by his parents. The soloist was Yehudi Menuhin, and the impact on the young violinist was instantaneous, sparking a lifelong devotion to Bach and his music. Now Capuçon has chosen to celebrate the personal milestone of turning 50 by making his first recording of the six exceptional works often known as the "Bible" or "Holy Grail" of the solo violin repertoire. "It was with a mixture of serenity and humility that I approached the recording sessions," he said. "This was a moment of introspection for me, a moment of listening to a voice within myself and of searching for the absolute." BELOW: J.S. Bach's Sonata No. 1 for Solo Violin in G Minor, BWV 1001: IV. Presto.
La Cinquième Saison
Julien Martineau, mandolin
Orchestre Victor Hugo, Jean-François Verdier conducting
French mandolinist Julien Martineau's new album presents two concertos written specifically for him: "La Cinquième Saison" ("The Fifth Season") by the French composer Corentin Apparailly and "Blackstone" by French composer Karol Beffa (b. 1973) It also features Vivaldi’s Concerto con molti strumenti RV 558. "This project is a deeply personal statement, bringing together contemporary creations, a renewed engagement with Vivaldi’s legacy, and a broader reflection on the very identity of the mandolin with an open and forward-looking artistic vision," he said in an interview with Mandolin Cafe. Rediscovering Three American Composers
Hsu-Cho Duo
Zenas Hsu, violin
Sookkyung Cho, piano
Violinist Zenas Hsu and pianist Sookkyung Cho make the case for three American composers who are nearly forgotten today. Composer Clara Kathleen Rogers (1844–1931) was a successful opera singer and faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music. A central figure in Boston’s musical community, she was overshadowed by peers she often hosted in house concerts like Amy Marcy Beach and George Chadwick. Composer Rosetter Gleson Cole (1866–1952) was the President of the Music Teachers’ National Association, and taught at the Cosmopolitan School in Chicago, where his orchestral works were often premiered and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Born in New York, Rubin Goldmark (1872–1936) studied with Anton Dvorák during his time at the National Conservatory in New York, and himself taught both Aaron Copland and George Gershwin, and served as head of composition at the Juilliard School of Music from 1924–1936.
