After returning to the concert stage in February, violinist Hilary Hahn has cancelled all of her performances through November, as she continues her recovery from a double pinched nerve that has persisted since July of 2024.
In a post addressed to her fans and friends on Facebook and Instagram, Hahn said that "while I thought I was fully recovered from my injury last season, I'm not. I am so sad to say that I must cancel my performances through November. I'm proud of the year of hard work it took to get back to the stage. It was amazing to play music with colleagues and for audiences again. This time, I'll be pursuing a more aggressive treatment. I have a great support team in place: they are optimistic and the prognosis is good. I have a lot more left to say on the violin and I'm not giving up! I will miss you and I hope to see you all soon."
Hahn initially had taken a seven-month hiatus in late 2024 and early 2025 to recover, and her return to the stage was celebrated and welcomed. Since February, Hahn has performed concerts with the New York Philharmonic (a four-concert series), San Francisco Symphony, Seattle Symphony as well as others.
Hahn will miss a performance at the BBC Proms scheduled for August 26 with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Violinist Isabelle Faust will perform the Dvorák Violin Concerto in her place.
Hahn remains scheduled to give a Carnegie Hall Recital on December 7 with Lang Lang - here's hoping she is feeling well enough to do it. That said, kudos to Hilary for making a courageous public decision to address her health - it is an example we humans in the classical room should take to heart.
