June 22, 2025, 9:44 AM · Next week violinists from around the world will gather in New York for the 13th biennial Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies. The Symposium is a biennial celebration of violin performance and teaching, featuring five days of master classes, recitals, lectures, and pedagogy sessions, all at The Juilliard School.

Master classes at the 2025 symposium will be led by Philip Setzer, Joseph Lin, Donald Weilerstein, Cornelia Heard, and Areta Zhulla.

Recitals will feature award-winning Canadian violinist Timothy Chooi and pianist Jinhee Park on Monday; and longtime soloist, conductor, recitalist, and pedagogue Jaime Laredo with pianist Anna Polonsky on Thursday night.

On Wednesday the symposium will feature a conversation and Q&A with superstar violinist Itzhak Perlman.

Pedagogy sessions will focus on repertoire, the art of teaching, and coping with performance nerves. Symposium artistic director Brian Lewis will explore "Duos for Two Violins," featuring repertoire by Grazyna Bacewicz, Paul Hindemith, Darius Milhaud and Georg Philipp Telemann. "Bulletproof Musician" founder Noa Kageyama will present "Managing Nerves Effectively - Shrinking the Gap Between Practice and Performance." Violin pedagogue Katie Lansdale will present "It's a Wonderful World: Irresistible Violin Repertoire from Around the Globe" featuring works by living composers Lei Liang, Carlos Simon, Fazil Say, Reena Esmail, Jerod Impichchaachaaha Tate and Jaroslav Vanecek. And symposium artistic advisor Catherine Cho will talk about "Communication and Perception: What Do Our Students Really Here?"

Check in with Violinist.com this week, as well as the following weeks, for daily coverage of these events. Articles will appear on Laurie Niles' blog and on our official Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies at Juilliard page, which contains both past and present articles on the symposium.

Hosted by The Juilliard School, the symposium is made possible through support from the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation. It dedicated to continuing the legacy of violin teacher Dorothy DeLay, who taught at Juilliard from 1948 until 2002; and whose many students included Itzhak Perlman, Cho-Liang Lin, Midori, Sarah Chang, Gil Shaham, Shlomo Mintz, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, as well as symposium artistic director Brian Lewis and Catherine Cho.

June 22, 2025 at 03:43 PM · Just curious, who was Starling?

June 23, 2025 at 05:28 PM · So excited to be here and meet you in person, Laurie!

June 24, 2025 at 02:42 AM · Okay, I was a little confused about the origin of "Starling DeLay" but I have it now!

The Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation was founded in 1969 by Frank M. Starling, in honor of his wife Dorothy Starling (not to be confused with Dorothy DeLay!) Dorothy Starling was a violinist trained at the Pennsylvania College of Music and Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. She was a professional soloist until 1930, and after that an advocate for classical violin music. The Foundation's mission is to support projects that advance the study of the violin, and as such, this foundation has generously supported the Symposium since 1982. So the Symposium was named for the foundation that honors Dorothy Starling, and for famous Juilliard violin teacher Dorothy DeLay. (And by the way, Dorothy DeLay's husband was Edward Newhouse.)
