Larsen Announces New 'Aurora' Strings for Viola

September 3, 2024, 6:08 PM · On Monday, Denmark-based Larsen Strings announced the release of their new Aurora Viola Strings.

The viola strings follow the release of Aurora Cello Strings in March 2021 and Aurora Violin Strings in June 2021.

"Aurora strings offer an outstanding combination of quality and performance without the need for a premium price tag," said Larsen Marketing Manager Maj-Britt Permien. "With our unwavering commitment to innovation and accessibility, we want to set a new standard in the world of viola strings."

According to descriptions by Larsen, "Aurora Viola strings rejuvenate your viola. They respond faster and more easily." The strings "increase the sound of your instrument" and "the wide dynamic range allows greater freedom in bow technique, letting you play both closer to and further away from the bridge with ease.

Violist Lourdes Rosales, a multi-style player who has been testing the strings, said that "the exceptional quality and unparalleled performance of Aurora strings have significantly enhanced my playing experience. I no longer have to choose between quality and affordability or spend a significant amount of money on premium strings. With Aurora, I can effortlessly attain deep, vibrant tones without any concessions."

Though it's hard to find price listings yet for Aurora Viola Strings, the retail price for the Aurora Violin set is about $52, and for the Aurora Cello set about $130. NOTE: Larsen Strings has informed us that the suggested retail price in the U.S. for the Aurora Viola set will be $82.91.

As for the composition of the strings: the Aurora Viola A string is made with a solid steel core and wound with precision-rolled stainless steel flat wire. The C, G and D strings are made with a unique multi-filament nylon core. Windings of precision rolled silver flat wire are used for the C string, and stainless steel for the G and D strings.

To put it in comparative terms, they are like Dominants but slightly more focused.

September 4, 2024 at 01:57 AM · Based on the violin and cello set prices, the viola set will probably be around $70. At that price one can afford to experiment -- well, more easily than with premium sets.

September 4, 2024 at 03:46 AM · The tension figures for the lower 3 strings are very low, which could be nice for some instruments/players.
