Breaking Glass Ceilings: Music by Unruly Women
Rose Wollman, viola
Dror Baitel, piano
Violist Rose Wollman and pianist Dror Baitel's new album celebrates the contributions of four remarkable female composers: Florence Price, Libby Larsen, Rebecca Clarke, and Amy Beach, highlighting their shared passion and deep admiration for the pioneering women who shattered conventions and paved the way for future generations. Represented by her short pieces "La Captive," "Berceuse", and "Mazurka," Amy Beach is the oldest composer on this album and was the first American woman to have her music published and commercially available in the United States. Libby Larsen, with her "Viola Sonata," is the youngest, and the first woman to hold the position of Composer-in-Residence for a major American orchestra (the Minnesota Orchestra). Florence Beatrice Price, represented by her piece "Elfentanz," was the first African-American woman to have her composition performed by a major American orchestra. And Rebecca Clarke, whose "Sonata for Viola and Piano" is included, was a British-American composer and violist who was one of the first women to play in a professional orchestra in London. The album also includes remarkable liner notes about these composers. BELOW: Breaking Glass Ceilings - Rose Wollman performs live with pianist Dror Baitel.
