Los Angeles Philharmonic announced that Kim Noltemy, who has led the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 2018, will be its new President and Chief Executive Officer.
On Wednesday theThe Dallas Morning News reported that "it’s a major blow to Dallas, where Noltemy has been widely considered one of the most effective arts administrators within memory."
"Of all the people we interviewed, she was the most prepared," LA Phil board chair Thomas L. Beckmen told the New York Times. "Sometimes I thought she knew more about us that I knew about us."
Noltemy, 55, will take over for LA Phil interim CEO Daniel Song on July 8, at which time Song will resume his role as the organization's Chief Operating Officer.
The announcement comes during a period of transition for the orchestra, whose former President at CEO Chad Smith left in 2023 to run the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and whose longtime Music Director, Gustavo Dudamel, is on the way out - leaving for the New York Philharmonic in 2026.
Noltemy will be tasked with completing the search for a replacement for Dudamel, who has served as the LA Phil's music director since 2009.
"The potential for the Los Angeles Philharmonic to grow, thrive and make a huge impact in changing how people think about music and how music affects their lives is enormous," Noltemy told the New York Times.
"I look forward to welcoming Kim into our LA Phil family," Dudamel said. "Our extraordinary musicians and organization have shown the world a powerful new vision for what an orchestra can be, and how it can impact the community around it, and I am confident we will continue to push ourselves to even greater heights in the years to come."
During Noltemy's tenure as President and CEO of the Dallas Symphony, the orchestra appointed Music Director Fabio Luisi and Principal Guest Conductor Gemma New and introduced a comprehensive plan and commitment for equity, diversity and inclusion at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She also launched the DSO’s Women in Classical Music program. Prior to coming to Dallas, Noltemy was the Chief Operating and Communications Officer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops and Tanglewood.
