HERS
Carr-Petrova Duo
Molly Carr, viola
Anna Petrova, piano

Comprised entirely of works by female composers, “HERS” vibrantly celebrates the vision, strength, resilience, and vital contributions of women throughout history. The Carr-Petrova Duo presents works by eight women – from the 13th century’s Hildegard Von Bingen to today’s Beyoncé – inviting audiences to share in the centuries of heartbreak, struggles, and triumphs that comprise the female experience. Other composers featured are Clara Schumann, Vivian Fung, Amy Beach, Andrea Casarrubios, Michelle Barzel Ross, and Rebecca Clarke. BELOW: "Where Things Weigh Nothing At All," (2020) by Michelle Ross, who describes the piece: "The title is a line from my favorite Milan Kunera novel - The Book of Laughter and Forgetting." She alludes to a fragment of a Gregorian chant that hung above her composing piano - "instead of attempting to transcribe the Gregorian Chant, I allowed it to swirl along with my other ideas and imprint itself into this piece, as I followed along as it unfolded..."

Terra e Cielo
Space Time Continuo
Amanda Keesmaat, cello and music director

Space Time Continuo - a "baroque bass band" - re-imagines Italian vocal and instrumental music spanning the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, drawing inspiration from the rich textures available to basso continuo instruments. Here they perform works by Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi, Diego Ortiz, Giulio and Francesca Caccini and Girolamo Frescobaldi. A new addition to the group, a lirone made by Francis Beaulieu in 2023, "provides an auditory window into the divine, depicting scenes of heaven and tears." The musicians make this music their own, playfully interpreting the vocal and instrumental lines on plucked strings, keyboards, and low-pitched bowed and wind instruments. BELOW: "Il balerino" from Balletti a tre voci (No. 1) by G. Gastoldi:
