The Week in Reviews, Op. 439: Liza Ferschtman; Pekka Kuusisto; violist Tabea Zimmermann

Violinist Liza Ferschtman.

Liza Ferschtman performed Alban Berg's Violin Concerto with the Boston Philharmonic and Benjamin Zander.

The Boston Musical Intelligencer: "Putting aside its numbers, puzzles, and tone rows, audiences have loved this concerto for its emotional intensity. Soloist Liza Ferschtman understood and communicated its power."
The Arts Fuse: "Playing with rich tone and bracing focus, Ferschtman dispatched the solo part with blistering intensity. The first movement’s lyrical, dancing figurations were all well directed, while the finale’s violent opening pages seethed. Meantime, its culminating, mellifluous episodes soared."

Pekka Kuusisto performed Carl Nielsen's Violin Concerto with the Boston Symphony.

The Boston Musical Intelligencer: "Kuusisto’s capricious character shape-shifted every aspect of the outing with an ease of virtuosity rarely seen in action. The violin served simply as a medium for expression; every line and articulation brimmed with elasticity as this great storyteller spun his tales."

Violist Tabea Zimmermann performed music of Michael Jarrell and Carl Maria von Weber with the Utah Symphony.

Utah Arts Review: "Zimmermann gave a compelling account (of Michael Jarrell's 'Émergences-Résurgences', playing with forceful energy in the tutti sections, and with subtly crafted, lyrical phrasings in the solo passages."

Jennifer Koh and composer Missy Mazzoli performed in recital for the Fortas Chamber Music Concerts series at the Kennedy Center.

Washington Classical Review: "'Kinski Paganini,' the second piece Mazzoli wrote for Koh, offered a brief burst of fresh air. With no straitjacketing recorded track, the violinist discharged the virtuosic multi-string challenges with refreshing vivacity."

Bomsori Kim performed Carl Nielsen’s Violin Concerto with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Lan Shui.

The Straits Times: "Opening with a huge orchestral exclamation, the soloist immediately has an extended virtuoso passage, accompanied by a long, single note on the horn. It was all that Kim needed to establish herself as a top-tier soloist, with excellent tone production, boundless energy and a hunger to express herself musically."
