The Week in Reviews, Op. 476: Benjamin Beilman; Vilde Frang; Leila Josefowicz
In an effort to promote the coverage of live violin performance, Violinist.com each week presents links to reviews of notable concerts and recitals around the world.

Violinist Benjamin Beilman.
Benjamin Beilman performed Korngold’s Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic at the Kennedy Center, filling in for Hilary Hahn.
- Washington Classical Review: "Korngold puts his themes, many drawn from his film scores, in the violinist’s hands, demanding both stamina and technique from the soloist. Beilman showed himself equal to the challenges, including the frequent excursions to the very top of the violinist’s register, where his tone shimmered attractively."
Vilde Frang performed Korngold’s Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, filling in for Hilary Hahn..
- Bach Track: "Not only must she leapfrog between registers at a breakneck pace, but the composer also entrusts her to introduce nearly all of the work’s themes. Frang dispatched these responsibilities with virtuosity, though occasionally without the lush tone one desires in this unapologetically Romantic piece."
Leila Josefowicz performed Thomas Adès' "Concentric Paths" violin concerto with the San Diego Symphony.
- Times of San Diego: "Josefowicz planted herself like a defending warrior, rocking, sawing, and fast-fingering through Adès brilliant score.... Josefowicz’s virtuosic stamina, keening lyricism, and committed advocacy were rewarded with a standing ovation."
William Shaub performed the Stravinsky Violin Concerto with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
- Arts Knoxville: "...Shaub’s style and exemplary technique probably converted more than a few listeners to Stravinsky the storyteller. A bit of drama occurred on Thursday evening’s performance thanks to an unfortunate string break on Shaub’s instrument during an energetic passage. The instantaneous violin exchange with acting concertmaster Gordon Tsai was handled so professionally, it looked routine—barely missing a note."
The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment performed all six of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos at Anvil, Basingstoke.
- Bach Track: "Overall, a sense of communication was uppermost in these performances, every member of the OAE clearly enjoying themselves. "
Chaowen Luo of China won the IsangYun Violin Competition in Tongyeong, South Korea.
- The Strad: "The four finalists performed concertos with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Poppen. Chaowen Luo...performed the Brahms Violin Concerto. "
