Welcome to our 14th annual Violinist.com Holiday Gift Guide! Gift-giving is one of the great joys of the holiday season, and each year we compile a list of some of the year's best new gear, books, recordings, and other offerings from violinists for you to consider in your holiday gift-giving, gift-asking — and loading of the smartphone, computer or other device. We hope this allows you to consider a music-related gift. We include gifts you can purchase in support of our sponsors, recommendations from Laurie, and our list of this year's Top 10 recordings.
We also would suggest that you consider supporting your local live music scene by purchasing tickets to local music events or simply making a year-end donation to a musical non-profit of your choice. Please feel free add your suggestions in the comments section. And yes, in this case, you are allowed to toot your own horn and recommend your own CD or book or product! You may also wish to refer to our gift-giving guides from previous years; I've listed links to those at the end of this blog.

LAURIE'S RECOMMENDATIONS
iPad and Apple Pencil
If you have not yet taken the plunge when it comes to digital sheet music, this might be the perfect gift. Being able to download music onto an iPad is extremely helpful, especially for gig music, getting your teacher's bowings, etc. etc. You can also upload your own sheet music to the iPad for travel, so you can have everything you want, without having to transport books and sheets. Get the largest screen you can afford, so that you can see a full page. The Apple pencil allows you to mark the part with fingerings and bowings. Once you get it you'll also need to download the Forscore app. It's easier than you might think!
PageFlip Firefly
Once you have the iPad, you'll want the page-turner! Here is a good one - a pedal that allows you to turn pages as you read music from a tablet. This one uses Bluetooth and works with keyboard-compatible iPad and Android apps. Just make sure, when you are tapping your toes, that you don't accidentally turn the page!
Blackwing Pencils
Of course, nobody is giving up paper sheet music any time soon, so we could all use some really, really good pencils for marking music. These are some of the best - nice and dark, with good erasers. Get a 12-pack, add on some pencil magnets so they will stick to a music stand, and give them as little gifties to students or musician colleagues!
Cool Beans
Here is a fun book of easy character duets for the beginning pupil to play with his or her teacher. Composed by Celia Cobb and Naomi Yandell, two pedagogues based in Cambridge, U.K., the pieces draw on a wide range of moods, styles and playing techniques. My favorite? "Watch Out (for the REALLY SCARY MONSTER).
