MusicAlly: a new platform for online violin lessons

June 22, 2020, 6:05 PM · We are in a time of unique urgency. This summer, kids across the country are stuck indoors. Many have no access to summer school programming, camps, and in some cases outdoor play.

They need quality interaction, creative learning, and art. Some families will be able to afford private online music lessons for their kids. But many more kids will go without.

MusicAlly and the PenPal program bring community and music lessons to kids using a buy-one-give-one format. Families with the means pay market rate (for your city, with sliding scale) for lessons with the highest caliber of teaching artist. Each lesson they buy funds a lesson of equal length and value for a child who could not otherwise afford lessons.

Perhaps more importantly than gaining technique and musical understanding, MusicAlly helps kids build a relationship with another child, and with a mentor via weekly, one-on-one sessions with an invested and experienced teacher.

Though private lessons are crucial towards the development of a young musician, studying music in a vacuum is not the path towards a well rounded artist. Studies show that the most common time for children to quit playing an instrument is between elementary and middle school, and the largest determinant of whether they continue is whether they have musical peers. MusicAlly creates a community of young musicians through the PenPal program.
