Korfkerrest Luna Questions now that people have them

July 22, 2023, 11:30 AM · Now that a few of you have Luna shoulder rests, I had a question about it relative to the original. I make a mark 2 korfkerrest. I love it but want it to go even lower. Can the Luna be set lower?

July 22, 2023, 8:08 PM · From my understanding, the Model 2 korfkerrest with the short foot can get about 4 mm lower than the korfkerrest luna, but the korfkerrest Luna goes lower than the Model 2 korfkerrest with the standard foot.

Here are the minimum heights between the two rests:
Model 2 (standard foot): 46mm
Model 2 (short foot): 36mm
Luna (short barrel leg): 40mm on the shoulder side; 43 on the chest side

Now, is that 4 mm noticeable? I have no idea since I only have the model 2 korfkerrest. I remember that Kypros Christoudoulides has both models from an earlier thread so he'd be able to tell us.

Honestly, if the 4mm difference is negligible I'm sure most people will opt for the Luna due to its ease of adjustment including myself. I still haven't managed to get it how I would like it to be though it is definitely better than before. I keep switching back and forth between it and my old wolf secondo that I've been able to get lower than the korfker but it's less secure than the korfker. I can just put the violin up and it's just there which really frees up my vibrato, but it's just a tad too high on the shoulder side due to its shape on the very edge. It digs a little into my shoulder.

July 23, 2023, 8:08 PM · John is the K2 noticeably lower than the Luna? One would think no since it's only 4mm. I myself have the foot raised a smidge higher so that the foot can actually be on the violin. If I put it all the way down I'd probably have to loosen the flange screw in order to turn the foot in the right place which would likely mess up the adjustment.
July 24, 2023, 12:56 PM · @ Christian, The difference is noticeable to me. The K2 with the short leg at it's lowest setting is just a bit too low for me. The Luna with the shortest leg (#1) is just right. The K2 is more adjustable as the legs can be turned and angled and the wood can be contoured. It may be more comfortable if you can find the perfect adjustment. The Luna however, is more simple to set up and store with it's snap-in, collapsible legs. Also the Luna in my experience gives the violin greater resonance. I can hear more ringing and feel more vibrating.
