Bach sonatas & partitas - new Ricordi edition

December 29, 2022, 1:14 PM · I always found an issue or two about the fingerings of several Bach editions which to me were on occasion less than helpful… today a new edition caught ly eye in the music shop:

I have played a few of my favourite movements after I purchased it and for once as a whole, here is an edition where everything feels organic and the fingerings fit the hand!

Marvellous. Finally.

December 29, 2022, 4:20 PM · Szerying's edition of the S&Ps put out by Schott is, for me, the gold standard. His fingerings are quite good, although I do not follow them slavishly. I would not bother buying another edition.

Seriously, I'm glad you found an edition that works for you. I have the "My Teacher" edition which started out as a Herrmann Edition (published by Schirmer) and contains many pencil marks.

Edited: December 29, 2022, 4:33 PM · I like Szerying's bowings for the BWV1006 Gigue, but to me his fingerings for it just smack of typical, probably out of date, mid 20th century virtuosity.

December 30, 2022, 3:51 PM · The nice thing about Szeryng's edition is that it is fairly transparent about what he added. It's got a lot of useful ideas to learn the pieces with.

Ultimately, though, the Baerenreiter or Henle with your own markings penciled in is the gold standard.
