Voice performance similar to violin?
Here is a performance of the Villa Lobos 'Bachianas Brasileiras #5' in an incredible vocal performance by Salli Terri and accompanied by Laurindo Almeida on guitar. Doesn't the piece sound like it could have been written for violin? And doesn't Salli Terri's performance have the kind of characteristics that sound like a violin?
Absolutely my favorite performance of this piece. Utterly magical.
I agree the piece could certainly be played on violin however the vibrato of the voice on that youtube recording sounded to me like a synthesizer vibrato - not a violin played by a human.
Something of the purity (?!) of the violin, vibrato "in" the note (rather than all over it), tasteful portamenti, strength without stress. Lovely.
Victor: I doubt whether the vibrato on that performance is synthesized or manipulated in any way by modern technology. The original recording was made I believe in the late 1950's, and that (to my ears) is exactly what's on the YouTube performance. Interesting speculation, though.
Perhaps it depends on what technology brings it to one's ears from the computer. I use a decent "hi-fi" headphone that cost several hundred $ that lets violins sound like violins.
Well, that Salli Terri performance is exactly what is on the original 1958 recording. Both the piece and the performance are astonishingly beautiful. And I still think that her phrasing/tone/technique/vibrato is something akin to the best violin performances.
