Voice performance similar to violin?

December 21, 2021, 6:04 PM · Here is a performance of the Villa Lobos 'Bachianas Brasileiras #5' in an incredible vocal performance by Salli Terri and accompanied by Laurindo Almeida on guitar. Doesn't the piece sound like it could have been written for violin? And doesn't Salli Terri's performance have the kind of characteristics that sound like a violin?

Stunningly beautiful, Sander. Thank you so much!!!
December 22, 2021, 8:36 AM · I agree the piece could certainly be played on violin however the vibrato of the voice on that youtube recording sounded to me like a synthesizer vibrato - not a violin played by a human.
December 22, 2021, 9:32 AM · Something of the purity (?!) of the violin, vibrato "in" the note (rather than all over it), tasteful portamenti, strength without stress. Lovely.

The original recording was made I believe in the late 1950's, and that (to my ears) is exactly what's on the YouTube performance. Interesting speculation, though.

December 24, 2021, 1:31 PM · Well, that Salli Terri performance is exactly what is on the original 1958 recording. Both the piece and the performance are astonishingly beautiful. And I still think that her phrasing/tone/technique/vibrato is something akin to the best violin performances.
