Violin shop in Minnesota
Are there any suggestions for violin shops in Minnesota? Bonus points if they are near Crow Wing Lake!
I have also suggested she orders something from Shar, given that they are well recommended on this site.
Context: Aunt will be on leave with her partner in the state over the summer, and would like to buy a violin. I have convinced her against buying something on Amazon, in favour of something that is well set up. A Stentor II would be more than suitable.
There are apparently multiple good shops in Minneapolis (3 hours away?). I have had excellent service and learned a lot from
Another vote for Claire Givens. I bought a bow from her when she had her shop in Berkeley and had very good impressions from her expertise and help. It looks like she has went onward and upward and to an even bigger shop in Minneapolis.
High end shops are not usually the best place to find a cheaper student violin IMHO
I would not call violins $675 and up "high end"
It's definitely a high-end shop but that doesn't mean they don't have a good range of fairly affordable instruments too. The ask is for well set up, and for that I like to go to a full service high-end shop. BTW her husband is a notable bow expert / maker.
Agreed, Stan; I just wanted to say that Givens is not exclusively high end--and it would be my first choice in Minnesota!
I'd check out Johnson's Violins in St. Cloud. It's much closer to you and they have a good reputation.
Also check out House of Note and the luthiers in town such as David Folland (not quite in town in Northfield) and Ute Zahn (in Mpls). I have met them over the years and both are wonderful! You could give them a call as they may have instruments in your price range.
Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone! I will pass this all along to my Aunt and she can decide.
