Bach dances (cello suites/S&P's)
Would someone kindly generate a list of the sort of characteristics of each of the dances that appear in Bach's cello suite and sonatas and partitas? Currently learning the first cello suite, and would like to have something to draw from.
Thanks in advance.
Which edition are you learning from? The Peters Edition of the Bach Suites for viola has lots of information at the front about what each movement is, how it could be played, as well as appropriate ornamentation etc.
Ah thats the exact one I have. I had a skim through it, but didn't take anything in. Thanks!
Yo-Yo Ma's discs both dance and sing!
Might this help? You'll need a JSTOR account:
Simon Rowland-Jones (chez Peters) has also transposed the Sonatas & Partitas, also with copious commentatries.
This is a classic case for Wikipedia. Example: Bourrée: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourrée
Rostropovich did a DVD album in which he also discussed each of the "dances" and of course played them. It is worth looking for.
