3rd finger exercise

March 22, 2021, 11:24 PM · What do you think of this third finger exercise composed by Elgar? Has anyone tried this? Is it helpful? I was going to give it a go.

Cellists are probably looking at that and laughing their heads off.

My teacher warns that injury is not impossible from that kind of thing. Think Schumann. (I don't care much if it's a myth)

March 23, 2021, 9:43 AM · My third finger exercise usually gets me in trouble.
March 23, 2021, 12:45 PM · Dangerous. If you try to fight against your anatomy, your anatomy will fight back.
If that were a piece of "real" music instead of an etude, you would Not hold fingers down.
March 23, 2021, 12:53 PM · I've been promoting the finger stretching device that Schumann used for a while now. Go to IWantToPlay10ths.gov

I'll see you there ;)

Edited: March 23, 2021, 2:09 PM · My left hand hurts just from looking at it.

The question though is: Why did Heifetz ask for a copy?

March 23, 2021, 2:23 PM · OUCH!!!
March 26, 2021, 6:19 AM · Greetings,
I tried this exercise. It is not stressful if practiced correctly. In fact, study involving fingers held down on various chord combinations are quite normal and can be very helpful.
I found the study stressful in the sense it is quite boring and does not do much for me. Dounis type exercises are obviously better.
