Old violin and bow - where to find information on it?

January 12, 2020, 1:44 PM · My wife has an old violin that belonged to her grandfather. It is in a wooden case and has a bow marked Villaume (but no "å Paris"), just the stamp "Villaume". The violin has a label with the names Anno Feci(rat?) 1821 and also Francois Sholt(sar?). Just wondering if anyone can place any of these people. Might a Villaume bow have been marked only with Villaume, but not with the "å Paris"?

Anyway, would love to find out more about this instrument and see if it has any value. Does anyone know if there are any knowledgeable people in Arizona who might be able to share some insight.

January 12, 2020, 8:17 PM · There are violin shops in Arizona but I am not familiar with any of them. You might try calling one of the violin makers in Arizona and see if they have any recommendations for which shops might have knowledgeable staff that can appraise your instrument. You can also look on web sites to see who advertises that they do appraisals.

Read the thread on the photos needed for violin identification, https://maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/333119-how-to-photograph-an-instrument-for-identifcation-purposes/

Post those photos on a photohosting site (unless you have requisite number of posts to post photos), post the links, and let the experts sort it out.
