Has anyone heard of a skin irritation on the palms of hands caused by the varnish on a violin? My 13-year old daughter has an eczema type of reaction on both hands, but more pronounced on the left palm (closer in contact with the fingerboard). It is quite possible that it is not related to the violin at all, but it only appeared around the time she started playing the violin a number of years ago and we would like to eliminate any possible causes in our search for a treatment.
I once knew a kid who was allergic to rosin and got a contact rash from it. But I have not heard of reacting to varnish -- I would think it would be too sealed.
