Less Popular Vivaldi Sheet Music

April 23, 2019, 9:03 PM · Where can I buy sheet music for the less popular Vivaldi Violin Concerti? I am in love with so many of his concerti and wish to study them but finding sheet music for him is so challenging.

I recommend not to follow the doctrines of period playing (with its preference of choppy bowings and ornaments) too closely and rather try to phrase the larger arches of Vivladi's melodic invention.

Have a look at opus 2: 7 out of the 12 sonatas are in minor keys. How often does that occur in a set like this (Haydn's opus 20 has 3 of 6)? Personally I think numbers 1, 4, 6 and 10 are a bit weaker than the rest, the others are just great. I have gone back to these pieces since I first bought the music as a teenager. I never get tired of them.

There is also a set of 4 sonatas whose manuscripts are in Dresden of which I have an old edition from East Germany: Technically considerably more demanding than opus 2 (double stops, string crossings and the like) and musically excellent, especially the ones in C-Major (https://imslp.org/wiki/Violin_Sonata_in_C_major,_RV_2_(Vivaldi,_Antonio)) and c-minor (https://imslp.org/wiki/Violin_Sonata_in_C_minor,_RV_6_(Vivaldi,_Antonio)).

The C-Major sonata is not quite identical to the East German version though and lacks a lovely slow movement on IMSLP
