There's this violinist called Oleksandr Pushkarenko whose gimmick is that he plays with no chinrest, "like Paganini". He's an excellent violinist, but watching him play makes my skin crawl...
He still plays as if there was a chinrest, but there isn't one; he just clamps down on the tailpiece for grip. It doesn't look particularly ergnomic or aesthetically pleasing, and most portraits don't show Paganini holding the violin this way. Or maybe I'm wrong, and there are detailed documents explaining Paganini's technique and posture. I dunno.
