Violin and Trumpet Duets?

September 4, 2006 at 04:52 AM · I've played the violin for 11 years, and I've got a friend at school that's the 1st trumpet in the school band. I was wondering if there is any good violin/trumpet duets that would be suitable for either a school talent show, or maybe a church performance. Thanks,

Evan Cornell

September 4, 2006 at 06:20 AM · Greetings,

there may well be. But off the top of my head, does this strike you as a very likely combination?

Cheers,

Buri

September 4, 2006 at 06:22 AM · Hey Evan,

I am currently in the same situation. I am looking for a piece for me and my sister for a talent show. Me on violin and her on Euphonium. Like Buri said, it is a very unlikely combination.

September 5, 2006 at 06:38 PM · It may not be likely, but he's a friend. Are there any other more common duet combos that can substitute parts for trumpet?

September 5, 2006 at 07:04 PM · um.....Trumpet is a Bflat instrument that is the problem. And the violin is a C instrument. You could always get a violin duet and transpose the trumpet part.

September 5, 2006 at 10:04 PM · My son's a good trumpet player, and we've looked and never found anything for the two instruments. Richard is right - try some violin duos (e.g. Telemann). A lot of baroque violin music has been transcribed for trumpet and works well (Marsalis and Nakariakov both play them), so violin duos ought to produce good results.

If anyone knows of violin-trumpet duos, do post here - I'm interested too.

September 6, 2006 at 07:11 PM · Yeah, I'm advanced on the computer side of things, so, at least for me, the easiest way to make up a trumpet part would be to scan music into sibelius and transpose it to b-flat.

September 6, 2006 at 07:23 PM · Evan, I would suggest (it might be easier) to go on the sibelius website and get a violin duet there (or even a trumpet duet) and it would be easier to transpose on sibelius because you wouldn't have to write it all in.

September 6, 2006 at 10:51 PM · Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. About how much stuff do they have there? I'll just look, and that would make my life oh so much easier!

September 6, 2006 at 10:52 PM · There definitely is a duet for trumpet and violin (with piano accompaniment...or maybe it's a trio, I don't remember).

I heard it once, and it is by an American modern composer (still living I think).

Unfortunately I cannot remember his name. It was very long and complicated, though...

September 7, 2006 at 12:34 AM · Evan, They have a large selection, both free and ones that cost money. Just go to Sibelius music and search violin duets. They have a few hundred.

September 7, 2006 at 05:51 PM · From a search of 200 databases. Works for Violin, Trumpet and piano or other instrument.

September 7, 2006 at 06:58 PM · Wow! Great list, thanks so much for researching this.

September 8, 2006 at 01:44 AM · I'm interested in that Telemann Concerto. Is there any known free sheet music downloads of it, or at the least, a publisher that is available in the US?

September 11, 2006 at 04:08 AM · lol, Evan I can't believe I didn't think of this before. Look for Flute and trumpet duets (or even piccalo and take it down an octave). It is a much likelier combination and you wouldn't have to transpose (because the flute is a C instrument.)
