two questions: phantasia, sarasate's carmen fantasy

July 29, 2006 at 12:12 AM · Two unrelated questions:

(1) Has anyone heard Phantasia (played by Sarah Chang and Julian Lloyd Weber)? It's the violin-cello duet medley version of the Phantom of the Opera. I'm wondering if there's any chance that the sheet music of this will be published in the future?

(2) What's the general difficulty level of Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy compared to some standard concertos? I just want to get a general idea.

Thank you!

July 29, 2006 at 04:19 AM · About the Carmen, it's pretty difficult! It's fashionable now to call it easy next to Franz Waxman's version, but the last mvmt of the Sarasate Carmen is up there with anything else people play with orchestra. It does lend itself to a certain kind of technique, however, so I've heard people do well with it who can't necessarily play everything on the highest level. Fun piece!

it really needs the flirtatious character of carmen, which is hard to pull off because you need every right kind of bow speed, vibration, and passion. it's a great piece though, i encourage you to learn it well =)

good luck and have fun!
