The format was wrong. Try this:

July 7, 2006 at 04:04 PM · That's a pretty bad angle to determine what violin that is. I'm no expert, but from the bouts it looks like maybe an Amati or a Guarneri?

July 7, 2006 at 08:19 PM · OK, good guess, but you didn't get it right.

So, not only do you need to know what kind but more importantly who plays it.

July 8, 2006 at 03:22 AM · Gil Shaham's Countess Polignac Stradivarius? That's my guess.

July 8, 2006 at 09:01 AM · Is the person holding the instrument in that photo the person who plays it?

I can't identify who that could be...it's quite certain it's not Shaham...and not Vengerov.

Maybe it's your violin, and you play it :P

July 10, 2006 at 01:20 PM · OK.

Stradivarius: YES.

Person holding it plays it? YES.

I play it? NO. (And besides, who am I?)

July 10, 2006 at 01:38 PM · That guy off violinistmasterclass.com??

July 10, 2006 at 01:57 PM · Nope. Not Kurt.

July 10, 2006 at 02:51 PM · yang liu from vmasterclass

July 10, 2006 at 02:54 PM · Nope. Not Yang.

July 10, 2006 at 03:24 PM · Josh Bell with his Gibson Strad

July 10, 2006 at 03:43 PM · Nope. Not Josh. But you are getting closer.

July 10, 2006 at 05:54 PM · Ilya !

July 10, 2006 at 06:06 PM · Nope! (nice try:)

Hints:

American

Male

There are only so many strads out there:-)

July 10, 2006 at 06:22 PM · I was pretty sure about the Gibson. hmm.

Could be Jonathan Carney with his Mercur-Avery. That would also explain the mute.

If that's wrong - I'll give up.

July 10, 2006 at 06:46 PM · Nope. Nice try. (Don't give up ;-)

July 10, 2006 at 07:15 PM · Judging by the size of his pinky, it's got to be Pinky Zukerman.

July 10, 2006 at 07:31 PM · "Pinky" Zukerman: :D :D

Have you been watching "Master of Invention" lately?

Nope. Try again.

P.S. I built a boat for a guy in Louisville back in 1992.

July 10, 2006 at 07:30 PM · Could it be James Ehnes ? but I have never seen him or his Strad.

July 10, 2006 at 07:32 PM · Nope. Not Ehnes.

July 10, 2006 at 07:39 PM · Ah. That's a clue. It's Shecky Milstein.

Was the boat spec'ed in cubits? If so, I know the guy.

July 10, 2006 at 07:43 PM · actually my first impression was the hand looked like Yo Yo Ma's, but of course...!!as a cellist could he have played the Dushkin ? (Frank Almond ?)

July 10, 2006 at 08:19 PM · Hey Jim, I don't remember cubits being specified. Darn :(

Nope. Try another guess. But Yo-yo is a very good guess nonetheless.

July 10, 2006 at 10:12 PM · Hey, maybe it's me, but I don't get an image. I've tried every trick I know of and still can't get what you folks are seeing.

July 10, 2006 at 10:29 PM · Try clicking on this Ray http://i6.tinypic.com/1z52hif.jpg. Should give you the image in a new window.

As to who it is; I am, to no one's surprise, clueless.

Neil

July 11, 2006 at 01:19 AM · Thank you, that got it.

I don't know who it is, but, It's a male. Thirtyish. Good enough to have a strad. Not grossly hung up on classical music. Lots of clues, but I can't guess.

July 11, 2006 at 10:02 AM · OK, I give it one more go,

Ex Kempner and the hand of Soovin Kim !

July 11, 2006 at 12:33 PM · Benny Atkinson you WIN!!!!!

Your clue was a good one Bill !

BTW I had a look at Soovin Kim website. I will certainly attend his concerts if he comes to my part of the world.
