sheet music The Chairman's Waltz

April 24, 2006 at 11:18 PM · Hi,

Does anybody have the sheetmusic for The Chairman's Waltz (Memoirs of a Geisha) from John Williams? I can't find a violin-piano version here in the Netherlands.

I think I can help in this area, as I have a very close relationship with this topic. While I will not be able to get music to you, I can fill you in on some information regarding music from "Memoirs of a Geisha." We, The White House Orchestra (of the Marine Band) just perfomed a concert of "Music from the Movies" that included a "suite" from "Geisha." I actually had the privilege of playing the violin solo "The Chairman's Waltz" as well as a short duet in one of the other movements with our principal cellist.

Here's the rub: The music has NOT officially been published yet. In fact, Paul Lavender (chief arranger for John Williams and Vice President for Hal Leonard Publishing) informed us that Hal Leonard was still working on "publishable" arrangements from the original soundtrack scores and, in their stead, sent us the music practically as it was recorded for the film. This is unprecidented in that usually arrangers take the often chopped-up music for the film and create more accessable "suites" for public consumption. The problems with THIS particular score is all the unique Japanese instruments that John Williams scored--many of which are not readily available to your standard orchestra.

For our performance, we used some synthesizers and lots of unique percussion instruments and--with permission from Mr. Lavender--even experimented with playing some of the Japanese instrument parts on traditional instruments where appropriate.

Our ensemble (U.S. Marine Band/Orchestra) has a unique relationship with John Williams and Paul Lavender since Mr. Williams appeared as guest conductor with our concert band in 2003. He conducted the concert made up of entirely transcribed music of his original orchestral scores--to include "Schindler's List," for which I had the unforgetable privilege of playing the solo. What a wonderful and gracious man. Naturally, "The Chairman's Waltz" was yet another way for me to remember that wonderful experience 3 years ago.

The good news is that I'm sure you will see "The Chairman's Waltz" and other favorites from "Memoirs of a Geisha" published soon, as the music has been well received and won the Golden Globe. It will be published by HAL LEONARD, so keep an eye out perhaps on their website.

Also, just an FYI, the music will likely appear with simple phrase markings--NOT BOWINGS. I was able to edit my part successfully with appropriate bowings/fingerings, in part based on Perlman's recording, but also my own experience performing it. Let me know when you get the music and I'd be happy to share the insights on how John Williams wanted it performed.

Best wishes,

But here's some good news. I've written the violin part out from listening to it over and over again for half an hour. I have to say it is almost the same, if not exactly the same! *feeling great sense of achievement*

If you want it, I can send a scan copy for you. I know there's a piano version available for purchase. So perhaps combining the 2 and with some minor re-arrangements, you'll have it before offical publication.

I've written it out in E minor (as played in the CD). I'm not sure what key the piano version is in because I've never seen it before. Send me an email if you want it. I don't check this site as often anymore.

There's another thing... you'll have to put up with my hand writing!

June 5, 2008 at 06:01 PM · Hi there,

I'd love to have a copy of the score you wrote, could you please send it to me? I've been playing the piece by ear the whole time, but it would be nice to have thr bowings and fingerings to look at.

June 25, 2008 at 08:40 PM · Hello William Yap

Is it possible to get a scan of the Chairman's Waltz violin scores from you as well. I really love the piece and have been hunting high and low for it.

Look forward to hearing from you.

The fact that the work is not yet published for sale or rental will not hold up in court.

June 27, 2008 at 08:49 AM · Thanks for that. However, I am in the UK where things are a little different.

As the music has been written down in a non original form (and may not even be that accurate. No disrespect to William intended)then it is not subject to copyright. It is not a copy of an original piece of work or a published item. It is a personal interpretation of the piece.

Obviously things are more restrictive in "The Land of The Free"
