Hello everybody,
I've got two questions, so I'll just post them together:
1. Could anyone recommend a piece for guitar and violin (preferably for about grade 7 guitar part and advanced violin part?
2. I need advice and information on buying a pick-up for my violin. I'm discovering the wonders of playing violin with bands, and it's really quite fun. So could you give me information on the best quality pick-ups, best prices, and where to buy them (online preferably)? This is the best option for me I think because I can't afford an electric violin right now =)
Thanks for your help!
L.R. Bagg is what i used for years. very happy with it. It is a microphone built into bridge
Hi,
The Piazzolla is great. There are also sonatas for violin and guitar by Paganini and Giuliani which are nice (and recorded by Perlman and Williams).
Cheers!
Search the archives here--there was a thread not too long ago with many listings. Also check Guitar Solo in California--they sell sheet music and will have many pieces for that combo.

Pick, Richard Samuel Burns ( 1915 - )
14 Songs of Love. Arranged with practical contemporary guitar accompaniments by Richard Pick. For guitar and voice or guitar with melodic instrument. Includes: Anon.: I Will Give My Love An Apple; Go ’way From My Window; Martini: Plaisir d’Amour; Purcell: What Shall I Do? from Dioclesian; Music for a While from When I Have often Heard from The Fairy Queen; Dido’s Lament from Dido and Æneas; I Attempt From Love’s Sickness to Fly from Indian Queen; Dowland: Awake, Sweet Love; If My Complaints Could Passions Move, Come Again, His Golden Locks, Think’st Thou Then By Thy Feigning?; Campion: When laura Smiles. The selection of these specific songs was occasioned by singers who brought them for performance, desiring guitar accompaniments. The main thrust of these arrangements is to provide practical accompaniments to be used on the modern classic guitar. Performed with other instruments (such as flute or VIOLIN) as purely instrumental works, these pieces are thus uncommonly useful. 36 pp. Press Reviews.

wow
For the piece of music. Paganini wrote quite a few violin sonatas accompanied by guitar. Some of them are less difficult then what the standard you think when you hear his name. I recommend the 6th sonata.
Since you're wondering about bands too, there are the famous Sonny and Brownie duets, with the harmonica part arranged for violin ;) Guaranteed to draw applause, maybe even the clap.
Since you brought it up, Jim...you may like (if you haven't heard them already) the Mississippi Sheiks, a guitar/fiddle country blues duo from the 30's. Dylan covered a couple of their tunes on one of his CD's.
BTW, a ton of flute/guitar stuff works for vioin/guitar. Not always--sometimes it's a little too "flutey" for the violin, but most of it works.
Mike, their name always made me think there were some kind of contemporary group, like Blind Boys of Alabama. Then I learned they were from the 30s. Either they recently got discovered again, or I somehow just missed them. I looked up one or two songs and they really didn't do much for me. Blues fiddle just doesn't grab me for some reason though I'm a big fan of other folk music from that era. It's my favorite music, actually. Do you know enough about them to recommend a CD or song?
Jim, I had a cassette of them (maybe still do), but I don't have the info. Theirs is not like typical Mississippi (delta) blues, it's more like country blues, lots of strumming on the guitar. The violin, for the most part, doubles the vocal line as in old Cajun tunes of that era. They do the earliest version of "Sitting on Top of the World" that I've ever heard, and I've heard many. I like the 2 tunes Dylan covered on "World Gone Wrong"--the title tune, and "Blood in my Eyes."
If you go electric, and simply want to amplify your acoustic violin...check out the fishman pickups. They're small and easy to use and sound natural. If you want the BEST result, go completely electric. ZETA makes the best electric violins out there and you can usually get them on ebay for $1000 or less. I tour almost 100 shows each year and I play the ZETA Strados. It's a great purchase and it'll never let you down.
Greetings,
just done a small recital for violin and guitar. Surprised to see one of the main works not on Clint`s list: Demillac- Suite in Medieval Style. This piece was written about 50 years ago and has the most beautiful melodies and rythnmically exciting movements to balance. On the whole, guitarists are less enthusiastic because they say the kind of chords used are extremely demanding and unusual- you need a pretty good player. Also did the Paginin stuff. Nowhere near as difficult as his show off pieces and a real pleasure to @play. You can choose your level of interpretation in a sense. That is, you can play them simply and directly in lower positions and they sound great, or you can imagine the kind of holy cow up the g string kind of Moses Fantasy stuff and do similar things in appropriate places. Great works that shoudl be played a lot more often. Shaham recorded them in about 1994 I think.
Cheers,
Buri

October 29, 2005 at 04:14 PM · There's an awesome Piazzolla piece for violin and guitar (originally for flute) called Histoire du Tango (The History of Tango) and has 4 movements. However, I don't know what you mean by grade 7 guitar playing and the last movement is really hard. Look into it.
