October 7, 2005 at 04:22 PM · Khachaturian! He wrote a gorgeaus trio for that combination.

Milhaud has also written a very cute trio.

October 7, 2005 at 05:04 PM · The Milhaud is a great little piece that puts a smile on everyone's face.

October 7, 2005 at 05:45 PM · Arutiunian: suite

Bartok: Contrasts

Milhaud: suite

Khatchaturian

I played in this kind of trio for a while and after playing these pieces, we had problems finding something else. Our solution: our pianist, who is also composer, wrote a piece. If you are interested, ask me his e-mail. ;-)

It's not very easy, but quiet highstanding, I think.

October 7, 2005 at 05:55 PM · There's a trio by Tristan Keuris that's pretty cool.

Also Stravinsky's "A Soldier's Tale" was transcribed for those instruments.

October 7, 2005 at 08:01 PM · Bruch wrote four pieces for clarinet, VIOLA, and piano, but I'm sure you can find an edition where the viola part has been transcribed for violin.

October 7, 2005 at 07:58 PM · The only thing I know of which hasn't been mentioned yet is the Largo by Charles Ives.

October 7, 2005 at 09:04 PM · I've heard the Bruch and wasn't that struck on them.

October 7, 2005 at 11:56 PM · As a member of a clarinet trio, my chamber music life centers around this instrument combination, and I must say that repertoire is not as difficult to come by as one might think. With the exception of the Berg Adagio, the staples more or less have already been covered in this thread. And we have to remember that many current composers have written in this genre. Some of the more notable ones include Bolcom, Diamond, Erb, Harbision, Hovhaness, Menotti, Rorem, and Tower. But if 20th Century isn't your thing, perhaps you can pirate the voice-clarinet-piano literature. (Schubert's Shepherd on the Rock and songs by Mendelssohn and Spohr are what immediately come to mind).

If that still doesn't suit you, you can always contact us, or other groups like the Verdehr Trio or Antares for more ideas.

October 8, 2005 at 01:28 AM · Darius Milhaud trio is excellent!

October 8, 2005 at 01:27 AM · There is a nice Romance written by Buelorussian composer, Turenkoff for violin, clarinet and piano. Peter, if I'll find it, I'll mail you. You will really enjoy playing it.

October 8, 2005 at 01:55 AM · Uvazhayemaya Rita,

The spelling for "Buelorussian" is more like:

Belorussian

or

Byelorussian

October 8, 2005 at 01:59 AM · I like the Milhaud, too.

October 8, 2005 at 03:38 AM · add a cello and you got the quartet for the end of time.

October 8, 2005 at 03:51 AM · Dorogoi Gennady,

I'm not sure you spelled correctly the word "Uvazhayemaya" too:)

About "Byelorussian" you are right (I was just in a hurry that time when I posted.) Anyway, thank you. Next time I will check my spelling more careful before posting (just in case you might improve me again.)

But I bet that you've never played this trio. LOL

October 8, 2005 at 10:33 AM · Do any of these pieces (or any others) have a clarinet part that is not too difficult - say ABRSM grade 5 or 6?

October 8, 2005 at 09:08 PM · Dorogaia Rita,

Does he have an interesting string quartet?

Aside from being a member of Seattle Symphony, I am also the 1st violinist of Odeon String Quartet

here is a cool website

We do alot of cool new music that has been written for us, but also I like to include some traditional rep. as well.

I have received a wonderful string quartet by Iosif Andriasov from his widow. I hope we can play it soon, it is very much in the genre of Khachaturian.

October 9, 2005 at 03:28 AM · Mnogouvazhaemiy, dorogoi Gennady,

I like your site! It is cool, indeed.

Don't know about quartet you ask. Did you play Tzintzadse's Quartet? It is actually three georgian (grusinski) dances written for string quartet. Easy to learn in a short term and enjoyable for listeners. Good for "showing off".

BTW what is Khachaturian's genre??? Cool humor!LOL

October 15, 2005 at 12:12 AM · May I respectfully suggest my two violin-clarinet-piano trios? One has been performed and recorded, always with good response. The other will soon be premiered.

November 1, 2005 at 12:12 PM · Anyone who is interested can hear, right now, a fine recording of the final movement of my violin-clarinet-piano trio "Sunny Days" by going to: http://www.sowash.com/recordings/mp3/sowash_vivo.mp3

The entire piece is recorded on the CD entitled "Eroica"

and the sheet music is available.

Thanks for posting the URL to the recording of your work, Rick. I was pleased to see that it still works after five years! It's nice to discover new repertoire on violinist.com.

November 11, 2010 at 01:35 PM ·

Contrast by Bartok

Trio by Khachaturian

Suite by Milhaud

Soldier's Tale Suite by Stravinsky

November 11, 2010 at 10:49 PM ·

If you're willing to stretch to the viola, you have Mozart's Kegelstatt trio and some things by Bruch.

November 11, 2010 at 11:09 PM ·

Also Schumann's opus 132 - Märchenerzählungen, for clarinet, viola and piano.

I have a new work too, for this combination, and started a thread on it here. It's now been recorded so possible to listen to it all on my webpage.

January 21, 2013 at 10:43 AM · I've discovered a Violin, Clarinet & Piano Trio that hasn't been mentioned yet (not even by Clint N.). It's by Karol Rathaus (1895-1958) and was composed in 1944 (op.53). I heard it on the weekend at a Cantus Formus concert in Paris that was apparently it's European premiere. I understand the players were reading from photocopies of a handwritten score.
