i'm looking for some american violin repertoire for a recital coming up. i'm looking for pieces for violin and piano (or other instrument) or solo violin, not concertos. some pieces i've been thinking of are:
morton gould: suite for violin and piano
virgil thomson: portraits for violin alone
thomson: portraits for violin and piano
cage: pieces for violin and piano
if anyone knows anything about these pieces or has played them, or if anyone has suggestions for other pieces, i would be thrilled to hear them. also, if anyone knows of a way to listen to a sample of, or the full piece for free, that would be wonderful. i'm in the middle of nowhere for the summer and don't have the money right now to buy lots of cds just to check out rep. thanks!

Don't forget the _Three American Pieces_ by Lukas Foss. Great stuff from his early years.
Corigliano violin sonata.
Haha, well it's not written by an American, but the Vieuxtemps Yankee Doodle variations sound pretty American if you don't mind playing asinine things...:D
Gershwin Three Preludes (arr. Jascha Heifetz)
Copland Violin Sonata
Ives Sonata(s)
Ned Rorem Sonata
How about Stephen Hartke's Caoine for solo violin! It's beautiful. http://home.earthlink.net/~stephenhartke/New/Caoine.html I also recomend that recording highly.
Walter Piston - Fantasia for violin & orch
Harbison 4 Songs of Solitude
Rorem Night Music and Day Music
Cage Freeman Etudes
Reich Violin Phase
John Adams - "Road Movies" for violin and piano
Samuel Barber - "Canzone" for violin and piano
George Antheil Violin Sonatas!!!!
Mark O'Connor writes a lot of that kind of stuff!

Cage - Strung Out for Amplified Violin. Long (first performance apparently had the music on a wall in an art gallery - went around the corner)
Just a thought....
How about waking up your recital with a bit of "Turkey in the Straw" or "Arkansas Traveler" or... maybe a medley of American fiddle tunes. I'll bet that your audience would love it if you start with about 8 measures of a slow tune... and then kick into American fiddle tunes!
Have fun with your music! :)

Bernstein Serenade
Gershwin Preludes
Kroll Banjo and Fiddle?
Sorry, I don't know where you can find full recordings... but I can say the Kroll is a simple piece. It can be learned really fast and it's relatively short. It's a springy piece haha I like it.
The Gershwin preludes are kind of jazzy. Those are nice.
I've never played the Bernstein Serenade, and I don't know what to say about it other than I think it's a nice piece. :D
