String Thickness

August 19, 2004 at 05:56 PM · Can anyone explain to me the difference between thin, medium, and thick violin strings

August 19, 2004 at 05:57 PM · in terms of what? a thicker string has to have more tension to achieve the same pitch as a thinner string. in practical terms as i understand it, it will take more energy to start a thicker string going, but it will spin more and give a more resonant, deep sound. but it will not be as clear and bright. something like that. think viola vs. violin.
