Shostakovich Piano Quintet

January 25, 2004 at 03:02 AM · Wow - what a fantastic piece of music! I played the first and second movements with a few friends this morning - I had no idea it would be so brilliant! Has anyone else on the forum played this piece, and what did you think of it? Do you have any playing tips or advice when playing this? What are the best recordings available? Responses greatly appreciated! :)

January 25, 2004 at 03:32 AM · It's a wonderful piece, isn't it? I have a recording of the Borodin Quartet and Richter playing it. It's pretty awesome.

If you listen carefully to the slow movement - I think it's the 2nd one - you'll notice it seems to have inspired the Red Violin theme, which I think is incredibly funny.

January 25, 2004 at 10:02 AM · Have also a version by Shosta at the piano with the Beethoven St.Qt. (1940).The players arent so good as Richter and Borodin, and the sound is bad. But if you want autenticity...
