Portland Oregon v.com get-together II

February 22, 2012 at 02:16 AM · The first Portland v.com get-together last July was a resounding success! People have been craving for more, so let's meet again in March!

Sunday, March 11, 2012 1:30 PM -

Saturday, March 10, 2012 1:30 PM - ?

Terry & Vicki Hsu's lovely home

1) Meet other v.commers.

2) Talk about our favorite violin subjects (or anything).

3) Show us your instrument collection (or anything cool).

4) Make music with fellow v.commers.

5) Eat, drink and have a good time!

It does not matter whether you are a regular poster or a lurker, a professional, advanced amateur or newbie, a classical violinist or fiddler, a shoulder-rest user or (OK, let's not go there! ;) ) -- all are welcome! :)

To RSVP, please post here or send me a private message (I'll send you directions and instruction to Terry's house via email). If you are coming, please consider bringing finger food and/or beverages to share with the group. Hope to see you there!

(Many thanks to Terry and Vicki for opening their home to us again!)

February 22, 2012 at 05:03 PM · I am in. See you guys there.

February 22, 2012 at 09:21 PM · Diane, sorry you cannot make it. Hope to see you next time! :)

A couple things we can also do at the meeting:

String test - since it takes a long time and is expensive to try all the strings on the market by ourselves, it would be interesting if we can all bring the strings we currently have (used and new) and try them on one anothers' violins. Who knows? We might be able to repeat the magic that occurred to Terry's violin last time for a couple other violins this time.

Setup test - some of us have a collection of shoulder rests and chin rests. If we can bring them to be tried out by anyone who is interested, it might help the setup-challenged among us (I'm one of them) to find the perfect setup.

Also, Albert said he is going to invite a couple violin makers. Terry/Albert, could you invite Ken Altman and Caitlin Pugh as well?

February 22, 2012 at 10:17 PM · I'd love to go, but I have a concert with the Portland Youth Philharmonic that day and rehearsal with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony! MYS ends at 1:30 so if I cut out I might be able to make it, but until I know my PYP call time I can make no promises. I'll let you know as I figure it out (and I was very upset to not be able to do it last time!)

February 23, 2012 at 12:38 AM · I have invited both.

February 23, 2012 at 07:44 PM · This sounds awesome, but I will have a newborn on my hands then, so I will be missing it this time.

February 23, 2012 at 07:48 PM · Jonathan, it's okay if you come a little bit late. If you dropped by at 3:00 I'm sure we'll still be going! Terry

February 25, 2012 at 01:43 AM · I’ve been looking forward to showing Albert in particular the changes in my old fiddle since Randy DeBey did a complete overhaul. I almost said no for March 10, though, because I have a gig, fiddling/calling a square dance in Dallas at 6:30, and three hours of driving (up plus back) before a dance doesn’t work. However my lovely wife Suzi said she would drive, if that is all right. She doesn’t play much, but she has a great ear and and is lovely company. Is that okay? If so, I hope to see you all then: and hope Ken can make it too. Randy would be an interesting person to invite. A superb craftsman, and he knows the tension of every string.

February 25, 2012 at 01:49 AM · Truman, your wife is more than welcome to come. I hope to see you both there! But did you also see that we're having it on March 10th? Terry

February 25, 2012 at 04:59 AM · Yes, March 10 (corrected)

February 25, 2012 at 06:19 PM · So far I have not heard back from too many people. I am wondering if we change the meeting date to Sunday March 11, would more people be able to attend? Please post here or send me a private message to let me know. Thanks!

February 29, 2012 at 06:00 AM · It looks like more people are available on Sunday March 11, so the get-together has been moved to that date. The start time remains the same at 1:30 PM.

If you would like to attend, but have not RSVP'ed, or received the directions to Terry's house, please let me know by posting here or sending me a private message. Thanks!

March 10, 2012 at 06:48 AM · Just a friendly reminder that the meet-up is 1:30 PM this Sunday (3/11) at Terry & Vicki Hsu's house.

If you are attending, you are encouraged to bring your instrument(s) if you would like to play, show us your collection, or demonstrate something. If you can bring refreshment to share with the group, it would be appreciated! Also, Sunday is the first day of the Daylight Saving Time, so please remember to change your clocks, otherwise you will miss part of the fun. :)
