You may call me Herr Professor

May 20, 2010 at 03:17 AM ·

 Dear colleagues,

It may seem a bit self-indulgent of me to come back to this discussion board with this message, which is little more than self-promotion. However, as some may benefit from it, I'll leave it just as it is.

Yesterday, I've been appointed Professor of Violin at the Basel Hochschule fuer Musik which is a big honor for me. Work starts in September, and it looks as though there will be special auditions held some time in August for those interested to study with me. So, my dear potential future students, I'd love to get some feedback from you, whether in form of a recording (see my address in profile) or otherwise.

Hearty greetings from Switzerland,

Congratulations!  That is quite an achievement.  Will you also conduct research?  Perform?

May 20, 2010 at 10:07 AM ·

so far it's just going to be teaching. Performing isn't ruled out though.

May 20, 2010 at 10:39 AM ·

Congratulations! :-)

I am considering to apply there for some PhD-position (not in music). Do you already know which courses you will teach at? And what prerequirements you will demand from your future students? :-)

 Dear Lena,

Can't tell you yet about the courses, but should be the usual undergrad and grad programs. There will be no pre-requirements - i'll just need to hear a person either live or on a recording.

Do you like receiving mp3-files over net, or do you prefer CD's sent home? :-)

May 20, 2010 at 11:49 AM ·

(Mp3-files would perhaps be easier to send to an email adress...)

May 20, 2010 at 12:04 PM ·

 sure, mp3's would do.

May 20, 2010 at 12:07 PM ·

How can I send you the mp3's?

May 20, 2010 at 12:33 PM ·

I am just afraid I ended up in your junk mail box due to spam filter:-) (>10 Mb recording sent.)

Mr. Gringolts,

Congratulations on your appointment!

I read that you will be playing with YOA in South America this summer. I will be part of the orchestra and look forward to backing your performance! Do you know what piece you will be playing yet?

Ich gratuliere dir!

Can you get prunes there?

May 21, 2010 at 01:37 AM ·

Bravo Mr Gringolts. If I was 35 years less, I would for sure be very much honoured to study with you!!!

May 21, 2010 at 03:14 AM ·

Buri san,

When in Basel you don't get  prunes - the prunes get YOU. Origato gozaimas.

Bowing profusely,

Good news Ilya! congratulation.

My mail could not get through your spam filter (got twice delivery failure) even though

I did not send any mp3...

It must be that Apple does not like Microsoft :-) :-) :-)

May 23, 2010 at 03:04 PM ·

Ilya - congratulations! I am sure that you'll have a lot to offer!

Lena - is the recording 10mb+? In that case it is probably too big file, split it in smaller bits or send just a part of it.

Mac email is pulling your leg - I got your email with the links!

May 24, 2010 at 09:58 AM ·

Congratulations, Herr Professor!

Would it be a coincidence that both "Herr Professor" and "Ilya Gringolts" have 13 letters?

May 24, 2010 at 03:53 PM ·

 so does "prune cocktail".

May 24, 2010 at 04:40 PM ·

There! See? I knew it!

edit: all this talk about prunes and letters should not detract from my admiration for your achievement. Chapeau!
