Casting Call for Violinist Movie Biographies

March 10, 2008 at 04:26 AM · In a thread on David Oistrakh, mention was made of Oistrakh's resemblance to actor George Dzundza.

So, now that we have cast the leading role in Oistrakh's movie biography, who gets to star in the movie biographies of Heifetz, Milstein, etc.? Please include image links to support your nomination.

I'm leaning toward Christopher Walken to play Heifetz:

........and Ed Asner as Elman:

but milstein is a tough one!

March 10, 2008 at 01:09 PM · tony shalhoub as Heifetz

March 10, 2008 at 02:12 PM · Alec Guinness as Heifetz! (Every time I see Doctor Zhivago, I think, "There's that guy that looks like Heifetz.") Compare and contrast. . . .

Guinness (in Zhivago [he's the one in the military uniform!]):

March 10, 2008 at 02:37 PM · Adrien Brody as Heifetz. Of course, he already portrayed Vladislav Spielman in "The Pianist" so he may not want to do anymore musicians.

March 10, 2008 at 03:21 PM · Milstein - can't find the actor's name or pics but he played the Russian coach in the hockey movie "Miracle"

March 10, 2008 at 11:06 PM · Stern - Buddy Hackett

Solerno-Sonnenberg - Carol Burnett

Heifetz - Jack Benny

Milstein - Jascha Heifetz

Perlman - Zero Mostel

Ysaye - Perlman

Paganini - Bela Lugosi

That violin-playing robot from the other thread - R2D2

March 10, 2008 at 11:27 PM · Wow! Ed Asner looks amasingly like Elman!

March 11, 2008 at 01:00 AM · Jack Nicholson could play Oistrakh

Will Ferrel could play Heifetz

Dick Cheney/John McCain could play Elman

Tom Cruise could play Milstein

Billy Bob Thorton could play Francescatti

March 11, 2008 at 01:39 AM · Milstein is a tough one, but how about Oscar Levant? (We don't have to pick actors who are alive, do we?)

March 11, 2008 at 03:36 AM · Billy Crystal- Itzhak Perlman

March 11, 2008 at 04:27 AM · Sam Elliot = Kreisler

June 29, 2008 at 11:27 PM · Tony Shaloub (Monk) as Toscha Seidel.

June 30, 2008 at 02:49 AM · If he were alive I'd nominate Jeremy Brett. Compare to Eric's picture of Heifetz above:

Hey look this:

Oistrakh and young Heifetz in the same picture!!!

Here you can see Joshua Bell and Tom Cruise :)

Very funny!

We must find girls!  It seems harder. Especially that girls change their look more than guys and that only with make up vs no make up, the pictures can be quite different. But I will try!

Anne-Marie  Oh, I have an idea...

Wow here is an amazing one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But note this, it is not the best pictures of the two women.  The two of them have much better pictures with smiling faces etc so don't judge them too hardly.  They look better than the pictures in real life.

Famous French actress Jeanne Moreau and famous violinist Ida Haendel

And the role of Joseph Joachim will be played by Santa Claus.
And the role of Shostakovich will be played by Prokofiev.
And the role of Eugene Ysaye will be played by Danny Devito.

I would pay anything to see Gene Wilder play Heifetz.  Talk about a contrast!!!!!!

The 'leading lady' in some porn I was watching last week was an absolute spitting image of Anna Sophie-Mutter ...

... sorry, I've got my coat and am just leaving! ;-)

X-rated movie "stars" playing famous violinists........hmmmm.
Stripped down to its essentials, I suppose it's a good idea. This gives new meaning to some violin terminology - shifting, 3rd position, vibrato, and (of course) fingerboard.

June 9, 2009 at 09:00 PM ·

Sander you forgot the most important one in terms of violin-x related issues: the "G" String !

Don't forget, Never strip with your violin, you might lose your G string!

June 9, 2009 at 11:23 PM ·

And let's not forget about the violin f-holes, and the nut of the bow, and the....oh, well.

June 10, 2009 at 01:37 AM ·

To play an X-rated female violinist....Vanessa Mae.

June 10, 2009 at 11:49 PM ·

Oh my god, there is so much double meaning words in the violin vocabulary that I wonder how viscious were the "inventors" of the violin!  I guess we didn't know that "aspect" of the cremonese master makers lol!  (just joking!)

Just to continu to expand this double sense musical vocabulary, in french, a common word for the scrool is the "Crosse".   And we don't pronounce the "e"!    Kind of odd for a maker to tell what he\she enjoys the most in his\her job is the crosse :)   lol !!!

June 11, 2009 at 08:22 PM ·

on a more serious nonsexual.. (at least for me xD) note Adrien Brody would make a good heifetz.

June 17, 2009 at 03:51 PM ·

The first picture is a look alike of  the young  Heifetz  busking in Paris:
The second picture is a look alike of the middle aged Heifetz  telling  his booking agent of a slight increase in his performing fees:

June 17, 2009 at 06:10 PM ·

How about the late Dom Delouise as the late David Oistrakh?

June 27, 2009 at 08:58 PM ·

I think that Claudio Cruz, our concert master on our State Orchestra here looks like Oistrack, he is also a good playe, here he plays Inverno Porteno by Piazzolla:
