I sometimes make some very strange faces whilst playing. Now I know this is acceptable to a certain degree, but if i see a performance with too much of this kind of thing I think it detracts. One should be able to control one's facial expression, I think. What are people's experiences with this? I went to a Vengerov recital recently, at which he did his characteristic "smirk". This is fine, partly because it's his trademark perhaps, but when I catch my expression in the mirror sometimes it makes me cringe!
