Tim West

Hello, I am a 57 year old bass guitar and guitar player just starting to play the viola and violin. I am a fairly competent bass player and rhythm guitar player and singer. I picked up a late 1800's copy of a Joseph Kloz 1774 viola in great shape at a car parts swap meet for 100 bucks! Starting from scratch, and not wanting to overstress this old beauty, detuning to B on the lowest string (like a 5-string bass) made sense to me. It makes some of the fingerings more in line with regular bass playing. Of course this makes the other strings weird flatted tunings to maintain standard intervals. Fortunately, I play by patterns and am not saddled with knowing how to play correctly. I play mostly "Jam" music and really want to play "barn dance" riffs. Has anyone experimented with detuning the viola? The tone is dark and swampy. I like it. Any thoughts? (Oh yeah, I don't really play by notes, just chords and patterns, by ear) Thanks, Tim
