Joseph Howell began his musical odyssey in an afterschool program in the Houston ISD as a fourth grade student. He fell in love with the violin and has never put it down. He studied privately with Zay Sevier, Albert Muenzer, and David Chausow. Joseph Howell met his wife, violinist Joy Howell when they were both members of the Houston All-City Orchestra in junior high school. They married in 1972 while both were music students at Sam Houston State University.
He holds a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance degree from Sam Houston State University. Mr. Howell was concertmaster of the SHSU Orchestra from 1970- 1977, and served as second violinist in the original SHSU Faculty String Quartet. His professional career has included violin performances in The Houston Symphony Orchestra, The Houston Ballet Orchestra, The Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, and The Brazos County Symphony . Mr. Howell is currently a first violinist in the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, and serves as Principal Violinist/ Orchestra Consultant in The Woodlands United Methodist Church Sanctuary Orchestra.
Joseph Howell is in his thirteenth year as an Orchestra Director in Conroe ISD. He has taught at all levels and has been at Grangerland Intermediate School the past five years. He taught master classes at area schools, including Caney Creek High School and Moorhead Junior High School. Mr. Howell began the Grangerland Summer Orchestra Camp in 2000. He also does string instrument restoration and repair. He and Mrs. Howell maintain a busy private lesson studio, teaching both violin and viola. Together, they directed the Conroe Symphony Junior Orchestra from 2003-2005. Mrs. Howell is Principal Second Violinist in the Conroe Symphony, and The Woodlands United Methodist Church Sanctuary Orchestra. Mr. and Mrs. Howell and their daughter, Jennifer, perform professionally as the Howell Trio.
