Julie Workman

I (Julie Geweke)grew up in Arlington, Virginia, studied with Harvey Krasney, was Concertmaster of the Northern Virginia Youth Orchestra (1967-69) and graduated from Yorktown HS, 1969. I attended Meadowmount from 1967-69, and studied with Sally Thomas. I graduated with a BME from Indiana University in 1973, studying with Tadeusz Wronski, and had post graduate work at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and Madison.

I retired after teaching for 36 years in the Rochester (MN) Public Schools. (I came for a one year position in 1974, and never left.) Most of my career has been spent teaching high school orchestra, which I absolutely love! I played in the Rochester Symphony Orchestra for 20 years, and my husband (Ellis) and I have raised three sons, who are now 27,25 and 20.(As of March, 2011.)

I have had the joints at the base of both thumbs replaced, which has been an amazing experience! (I highly recommend my hand surgeon, Dr. Peter Amadio, at the Mayo Clinic. He is referenced in Janet Horvath's book, Playing (Less) Hurt.

I maintain a small private studio, which I have expanded since (officially) retiring from public school teaching in October, 2009 and finished out the school year in a part time position. I am currently Vice Chair of the Rochester School Board, to which I was elected on Nov. 2, 2010.
