I started out on with fiddle tunes about 4 or 5 years ago. I recently decided (after realizing I was overly comfortable with most keys in first position) to really buckle down and tackle some classical repertoire. I started up with my first regular teacher, and I am working on shifting to higher positions and deliberate bowing. In the Irish fiddle school the players often strive for freedom and a bit of wildness in the bow technique. Kevin Burke (one of the most famous) is said to be able to accent any note on any beat regardless to which direction the bow is moving.
