Well, it's curious how things change. In addition to a salesman, chamber musician, freelance player, and part-time luthier, I'm going to be named the Interim Music Director of the Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
As the realization sinks in, it occurs to me how little the job actually has to do with conducting. There is so much else involved, it's a wonder that full-time music directors have any time left over to actually study the score. Fundraising, social events, board meetings, committees, planning, rehearsal scheduling -- and that's only scratching the surface.
It's a good thing it's only a one-year position. :-)
