Sostenuto Strings

October 16, 2022, 11:33 AM · Do you have old strings laying around? Ones that you aren’t going to use, but still have lots of life? Should you keep them? Toss them? How about donating them to a worthy cause?

Many professional and advancing student musicians change their strings every few months to ensure a top quality sound. Most of these strings are still in very good condition. Meanwhile, many under-resourced music programs have difficulty obtaining quality strings. In addition, metal from strings is not recyclable, and it is estimated that about 1.5 million pounds of string metal goes to the landfill each year.

Sostenuto Strings collects donations of gently-used violin, viola, cello, and bass strings from professional/youth orchestras, luthiers, conservatories, music schools, and individuals and distributes them to community music programs in the U.S. and abroad. “Sostenuto” means to sustain a note beyond its original value. By donating and distributing quality strings, we can extend their value and enrich others in their music-making.

When I was younger, I practiced on a cello with a poor sound. The C string in particular was frustrating because it seemed to resist my every command instead of obeying. I voiced my complaints to my teacher, and because I could not get a better cello at the time, he recommended better strings. The new strings yielded a much improved, satisfying sound, which in turn strengthened my resolve to practice.

Last year, I founded Sostenuto Strings so that others can be empowered in their musical pursuits. So far, I’ve collected about 1000 strings to be distributed to three youth community programs, including one in Ghana, Africa. My goal is to help as many musicians as possible, so please look around and see what you have to spare. Donating your strings is a simple gesture that can reap huge rewards. And you’ll be reducing waste and landfills.

If you’d like to donate or receive strings, please go to our website and fill out the appropriate form.
