Good news: The directory is back! Opt-in now if you want to be listed

October 8, 2013 at 4:59 AM

We've got some great news for members: The directories are coming back!

Long-time members might recall that we used to have a public directory of violin professionals here on the site. In fact, that was the original feature on, back in the late 1990s — a place for violin teachers and performers to create a public webpage describing themselves.

We had to retire the directory a couple years ago because fighting the spam bots attacking it was taking too much of our attention from the rest of the site. But we've been looking for a way to bring back the feature, and now it's happening.

We will have two new directories: one for professional teachers, and one for professional performers. If you are a violin professional who would like to opt in to one or both of the directories, you can do that from your registration page. Just update your registration form to opt into the directory you wish to include you. This is a free service for members.

Two things to keep in mind:

The directories are open only to violin professionals who register with If you said that you were a student, parent, amateur, or "just a fan" on your registration form, your profile page will not be linked to from either directory.

You must opt in to the new directories to be listed. If you were in the old directory from way back when, you'll need to opt in again.

Also, in an effort to combat spammers trying to get into the directory, we've implemented a few precautions:

First, directory links will not appear until 48 hours a new registrant first logs in to That gives us some time to police the new registrations before they go public.

Second, registered members of will find a new link at the bottom of each profile page, where they can report a profile for being spam, or otherwise inappropriate. This link will send a message to the site's editors, who can immediately ban a user for spamming or abusing the site.

Third, in an effort to keep the directory fresh, only profiles from members who have visited the site in the past 30 days will appear in the directories. Should you happen to miss us for a while, simply returning to the site and visiting a single page while logged in will be enough to revive your directory listing. You don't need to submit or edit anything. Obviously, we hope that you'll keep visiting far more often than once a month, but limiting the directories to active users provides us with one more way to ensure that the directories won't grow stale or spammy.

For luthiers and violin shops, we're also making it easier to buy a listing in our Business Directory. We've just installed a new listing application form that allows you to input all your shop's information online. The Business Directory provides a great way to get your name in front of's thousands of daily visitors, as it also includes a text link (under the "Sponsors" column) on all other pages of, so that every visitor to the site has the opportunity to see your link.

We will be making the new teachers' and performers' directories "live" next week, but we wanted to give you this early opportunity to opt in before we make the new services official by adding them to the site navigation at the top of each page. We hope that these new services will help bring new students and gigs your way!
