Thumb Tension

December 2, 2009 13:42

Hello violinists, While I do not professionally play the violin I am doing my research on violinists. I am curious, I am working with a few professional violinist who experience an increase of tension in the right thumb as the bow descends. (This is all in the context of an Alexander technique lesson) They claim that the thumb then rebalances the tension with the other fingers when the bow ascends. I am not sure about this becuase when I play (not at all professionally)  I do not experiece excessive tension in my thumb. Any thoughts?
