The Week in Reviews, Op. 407: Stefan Jackiw; TwoSet Violin; Gil Shaham
July 5, 2023, 5:19 PM · In an effort to promote the coverage of live violin performance, Violinist.com each week presents links to reviews of notable concerts and recitals around the world.
Violinist Stefan Jackiw.Stefan Jackiw performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Grant Park Orchestra.
- Chicago Classical Review: "Throughout Beethoven’s mammoth canvas, Jackiw’s understated, elegant presence allowed the gentle nuances of his playing and interpretation to speak for themselves, even over the Pritzker Pavilion amplification. "
- Hyde Park Herald: "Jackiw spun filigreed gold. His understated rubato and nuanced choices were stunning."
TwoSet Violin performed its TwoSet Violin World Tour concert in Montreal.
- The Strad: "...how does the TwoSet Violin brand of classical music – built on relatable and humorous videos about intonation struggles and performance anxiety, ’roasting’ media representations of classical musicians, and games like charades and ’guess the soloist’ – translate to the stage? Brilliantly. "
Gil Shaham performed an impromptu solo recital while waiting for the Israel Philharmonic, whose bus got stuck on the way to Haifa.
- Slipped Disc: "The soloist of the concert Gil Shaham, who arrived early to play the Barber concerto, stepped up to give a 25-minute solo recital that included Bach Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin and an encore he played the night before in Tel Aviv. It’s a piece that was written especially for him during lockdown: Isolation Rag by Scott Wheeler."
The Emerson Quartet and Emanuel Ax, and the Pacifica Quartet performed at the Tanglewood Festival.
- The Berkshire Edge: On the Emerson: "The concert was a love-fest, but still offered challenges to listeners in the first half in the form of a new commission by Sarah Snider and a complex, emotionally wrenching late Shostakovich work: his Quartet no. 12 from 1968." On the Pacifica: "The Pacifica Quartet clearly finds its spark and leadership in the first violin of Simin Ganatra, who exudes passion and commitment, with all musical details vividly experienced. That does not mean that her playing defines the sound of the group...; rather, it infects her colleagues who all play with equal commitment and vividness to a point where the intensity can almost reach a bursting point."
Kristian Winther performed Vivaldi's Four Seasons at Sydney’s Great Synagogue.
- Limelight: "Winther delivered a high-octane performance of the Vivaldi, taking the occasional liberty but nothing too shocking and always with great taste. His technique is, of course, stunning..."
