Beethoven, Schumann, Franck
Renaud Capuçon, violin
Martha Argerich, piano
French violinist Renaud Capuçon and Martha Argerich came together in April 2022 for a joint recital at the Easter Festival in Aix-en-Provence, and their extraordinary rapport comes across in this performance of three of the repertoire’s finest violin sonatas: Schumann: Violin Sonata No. 1 in A Minor; Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata and the Franck Sonata. The performance was captured live in a concert that they dedicated to their friend and colleague, the pianist Nicholas Angelich. Having first met more than 30 years ago, Capuçon and Argerich know one another so well that, whenever they go out on stage, "there is no fear," Capuçon said. "It’s as if we just hold hands and leap." Mozart - 'The Prussian Quartets'
Chiaroscuro Quartet
Mozart’s 'Prussian Quartets' (Nos. 21-23) - were his last compositions for this formation. Written for Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia and an amateur cellist, they offer the cello an unusually prominent role. The first of the three was composed fairly quickly, in June 1789, but the next two were not completed until the following year. The Chiaroscuro Quartet, comprised of violinists Alina Ibragimova and Pablo Hernán Benedí, violist Emilie Hörnlund and cellist Claire Thirion, offers a period interpretation, using gut strings and historical bows. American Stories
Pacifica Quartet
Anthony McGill, Clarinet
New York Philharmonic principal clarinetist and 2020 Avery Fisher Prize-winner Anthony McGill teams up with the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet for this album featuring works by American composers. The works include Ben Shirley's "High Sierra Sonata"; James Lee, III's Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet; Richard Danielpour's "Four Angels"; and Valerie Coleman's "Shotgun Houses." "With these stories, we connect the idea of community and a community of diverse creators all around the world," McGill said. "We are telling a story not only within each individual work, but also the story of the composers themselves. The power of music is its ability to tell stories and to connect people with one another." BELOW: Trailer for "American Stories":
