The Week in Reviews, Op. 216: Andrew Sords; Chloe Hanslip; Anthony Marwood

Andrew Sords performed works by Brahms, Bloch, Grieg, Messiaen and Beethoven in recital with pianist Brian Wentzel.

Cleveland Classical: "The stunner of the afternoon was a breathless but magnificently controlled performance of Beethoven’s 'Kreutzer' Sonata (No. 9, Op. 47). The two musicians put pedal to metal and charged through the first and third movements with giddy aplomb. Taking their time with the often ornate variations of the second movement, they passed virtuosic gestures back and forth charmingly."

Anthony Marwood performed the Berg with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

The Florida Times-Union: "Marwood performed with the conviction and directness needed to pull off such a demanding work to full effect; none of the towering technical challenges of the score seemed to cause him the slightest concern, and throughout he displayed a control that colored the lines with a seemingly endless variety of light and shade."

Chloe Hanslip performed the Korngold with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra .

NJ.com: "Hanslip, for her part, delivered all the virtuoso notes, but usually with an earthiness rather than sweetness."

In other news: longtime Dave Matthews Band violinist Boyd Tinsley announced last Friday via Twitter that he would be "taking a break" from the band. Rolling Stone: "The violinist has been a member of the group since 1992 and appeared on every Dave Matthews Band album from 1994's Under the Table and Dreaming to the band's still-untitled ninth studio LP, due out this summer."
