For full bios of the competitors, click here. The semi-finalists were chosen from 24 violinists ages 18 through 32 who started preliminary rounds on Tuesday. The semi-final rounds, which take place at the Shanghai Symphony Hall, begin on August 23, and I'll be bringing you impressions from Shanghai next week.
All stories will be available on our Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition page. Six finalists will be announced at the conclusion of the semi-finals, and prize winners will be announced following the Final Round, Sept. 1 and 2.
